Bee Lee Allison (Richardson)
Sandy (Althouse) Lamb
After Duke, I moved to New York City and have never left. Living in a co-op apartment at Park and 88th Street for the past 25 years. How's that for stability? Certainly is a contrast to the national and international tales of classmates (thinking of Hoge and Hayes for starters).

My first job was at Mutual of New York, in a management training program (boy is that a dinosaur of a concept) and then in the Securities & Investment Dept. where I worked my way up to be a portfolio manager of long term fixed income private placement securities. Got an MBA from NYU at night (4 years and 3 summers).

Many wonderful memories of MONY, but the best was that "mutual" friends introduced me to my husband, Lowell, who was an actuary there. Lowell is a '57 graduate of Penn, Wharton, so while I was staggering into 7th grade, he was dating the S'more College girls. Got married in 1975 and happily traded in the name Althouse (you all know why) for Lamb.

Left MONY in '83 for Lazard Freres & Co llc, the private investment bank, best known by most for Felix Rohatyn who "saved" NYC in the late '70's. I'm still here, having spent 18 years doing corporate finance, M &A and restructuring advisory assignments. Became a partner in '91 and started a small practice which I called the Power Group in '95.

Then in mid '01, I went "on loan" from Lazard to become President of the Board of the New York Women's Foundation. This is an organization which raises money to make grants to programs in New York City run by woman to benefit low income women and girls. Wonderful experience, working with an all-woman and culturally diverse board and staff. We raised lots of money at a breakfast held in May this year for over 2,000 attendees and gave away $1 million. Can't tell you how rewarding this year has been. Unfortunately, I rotated off the Board in mid '02 and therefore had to begin to figure out what I want to do when I grow up.
As we speak, I am talking with Lazard about returning to the world of M&A and also exploring many other possibilities. Also chairing a $35 million capital campaign for my church. Would like to keep the new lifestyle but would also like to be working at something worthwhile. Stay tuned.

Lowell and I have enjoyed many vacations in the mountains of Switzerland and Italy and are quite the avid hikers. Climbed Kilimanjaro awhile back. Lately we have been going on trips in the nature of expedition sailing on a 70-90 passenger boat. Lots of on- shore hiking and off- boat zodiac rides between naturalist lectures and marine mammal and bird watching from the deck. You may get the idea that we don't like to be still. Sailed in the High Arctic this July and will head for Anarctica this November. Yes, we are bipolar in '02. I often describe my lifestyle as "no kids, no dog, and a live-in superintendent" or no stress except for living in NYC and working in Mergers & Acquisitions!

At least Lowell is now retired and enjoying it thanks partly to his love of our little house in the country in Northern Dutchess County New York.
That's enough. Looking forward to July '03. We plan to be there.

B.S. in Civil Engineering from PMC Colleges – Now known as Widener University.

I worked for Atlantic City Electric Company from 1969 till 1998. It was an electric utility that served the lower third of New Jersey. I worked in various engineering position, but mostly in the High Voltage or Transmission areas. I became Manager of the Transmission Engineering, Construction and Maintenance Department in 1991.

I was the employee of the year in 1988 for the construction a transmission constructed with minimum impact on the environment.
I was offered a buy out in May of 1998 when the company was bought by another electric company in Delaware and became Conectiv.

I have been retired since then.

Single again. I was married twice. The last one ended in 1994. I have a son Brian (age 30) and a daughter (29) from my first marriage. They are both married. My son has a produce business. My daughter is a teacher and is married to a medical doctor. Both of my children presented me with my first grandsons the past winter. Alexander and Brian, Jr.

I moved to Stone Harbor, NJ in 1994 to take care of a handicap father. It is the house my family has owned since 1948, some of you remember it. My father died in 1997. Since then I have been assisting in the care of my mother.
After the last reunion, Gwyn and Steve have introduced me to a dear friend in Florida and I have visited her (Gaye) and Gwen and Steve there many times. Since then she has moved to Texas and Arkansas and in fact her daughter is engaged to Gwyn’s son.

Hobbies/Interests: Going to beach and reading. The Civil War – I must have every book written and every video ever made. I love to visit Civil War museums and battlefields -only about 1000 to go.
Photography – both 35mm and the new digital. Woodworking – love to work in oak. I must have the most expensive clothes hamper in Stone Harbor. I have built armoires, kitchen cabinets, entertainment center and I currently building toy chests for my new grandsons.

Gwyneth (Brain) Harner

B.S. in English from Penn State - 1967.
M.Ed. in Secondary Counseling from Shippensburg - 1972

I taught English and was a high school guidance counselor in Pennsylvania for 27 years. In 1999 I took early retirement and my husband and I relocated to Pompano Beach, Florida! We were lucky enough to find a condo on the beach, here, and I have resumed work as an 11th and 12th grade counselor for the Broward County School District.

I work in a high school with 4,300 students! The job I do is very much what I've always done. The difference is that I come home from work and feel as if I'm on vacation every day!

We love living in Florida and are so happy we were able to make this change!

Married: to Steve Swartz since 1984. Many of you have met him, as he's attended all three of our reunions.

Children: two sons, ages 27 and 24, from a previous marriage. Devin, my older son, has just finished his M.A. in English and is at a loss as to what to do next! (Suggestions gratefully welcomed.....) Guthrie is still finishing his undergraduate degree and working full time. He has changed colleges several times and majors twice, so it could be a long process, but I've like to think I've reached the "whatever" stage of parenting. It's all out of our control, anyway!

Hobbies/Interests: I try to walk on the beach and swim in the pool every day. I read, constantly, and love to cook. I've been a vegetarian since 1972, and have a strong interest in healthy, meatless meals. I am also playing a lot of bridge and singing with the Delray Beach Chorale.

Forty years wandering in the wilderness -
That's how it often felt to me. Just now I think I've made it to the land of milk and honey.
Have worked over the years mostly in church related jobs Might seem to be in a rut, and sure aren't getting rich!
But life is good. God is good. I am forgiven. This is a very good thing!
Four kids, two grandkids, wonderful new husband (third time is the charm, I hear)
Graduated with BA from Penn in '92 - 25 years after original class, Just to prove to myself that I could do it.
Living in Manayunk with husband Steve Zeitler. No kids at home, just pets. Eldest daughter Cheryl lives in Hawaii (on the Big Island) with husband and 2 daughters, Lauren and Katie. Don't see them as much as I would like! Daughter Lydia is a neonatal intensive care nurse at Temple Hospital, lives in Phila near the art museum. Son Ben is a student and manages a bike shop near the art museum.

Son Chris is a student in Northern Idaho. Brother Jack is an attorney, lives in Montgomery County.

Dad died in '84, Mom still lives in Swarthmore, in the Strath Haven, still walks every day (in good weather) on the college track. She will be 93 in September! Hope I got a few of her genes.

I enjoy cooking, gardening, sewing, reading, doing cryptograms, reading. Don't watch TV at all. Life is much more interesting than anything on TV.

Husband Steve has created an electronic instrument and we are playing music together. We are presently at work on a CD.

We camp in West Virginia on some virgin land he owns, and explore caves (Steve is a member of National Speliological Society).

Still have a place at the shore but don't get there much.

Jerry Clothier

Attended University of Delaware. Majored in Acc't'g, ran track for two years. First met my wife, Sherry, of 34+ years at our fraternity open house for freshman women.

I enlisted in the Navy during my junior year and attended Officer  Candidate School in Newport, R.I. during the summers of '66 and '67.  Rec'd a commission in Oct '67 and was sent to Supply Corps School in  Athens, Ga., then to my ship, LSD-20, the Donner, stationed  in Little Creek, Va. Our squadron was supposed to be rotated over to  Vietnam in early '70 but our orders got cancelled because the war was winding down.

I then joined the audit staff of Price Waterhouse in Philadelphia.  I didn't like auditing, decided to go to grad school, applied to Wharton, got shot down, reapplied and some how got in and even managed  to graduate in the 2nd quintile.

I returned to Price Waterhouse in  their Management Advisory Services practice. After 8 years  I was promoted to partner and was told I would be transferred to Dallas. The possibility of joining the Phillies was presented to me at a  going away party in August of '81 before we left for  Dallas. Obviously, I did join the Phillies, officially  in Feb of '82. This is my 22nd year  with the organization.  I serve as #2 on the business side, SrVP and CFO.

My two daughters are both grown. Amy is 28, married for 4 years and serves as a Law Clerk for a Federal Judge here in Philadelphia. Kelly is 24, engaged,  living in Jacksonville, FL and selling medical equipment for a company  called Ortho Rehab.

My mom and dad have both passed away - dad in 1988 at age 81 and mom in 2000 at age 92. Sherry and I live in the West Mt. Airy section of Philadelphia between Germantown and Chestnut Hill with our yellow lab, Clutch.

I have experienced prostate cancer. Despite some later spreading  after surgery, I have been in remission since Feb  of '98. I go to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore every 12 weeks for  maintenance treatments.

I recently traveled to Rio for their 2003 Carnaval to celebrate a bachelor party for a particular  employee at the Phillies.  The time there was spent visiting  two incredible sights - Corcavado and SugarLoaf, attending an almost  indescribable pre Carnaval ball,  attending the final night of the annual Samba School competition, and staying up til 5am one night - discussing the meaning of life and what true relationships should be  all about. I may even right a book about it some day!

I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion.

The love of France developed during high school French class - I landed in France in 1967. Parisians convinced me to go to Italy in 1973. I returned to the US in 1975.

I supported President Carter's environmental policy and helped start his Solar Energy and Energy Conservation Center. I met Jonna and moved back to Italy one day after election day 1980.

Catherine and Michael were born in the Vatican Hospital where I worked (investigative liver transplantation surgery in the mid 1980's, then surgical biomedical research). The children attended Italian schools. Chronic musculo-skeletal problem necessitated a sit down job, hence cognition and dementia research at the University of Virginia, Roanoke-Salem.

Married: to Jonna (Jonna teaches English as a second language to immigrant children in the Roanoke School system.)

Children: Catherine in premed, and Michael in high school.

Activities/Interests: walking in nature, canoeing, French impressionistic art, Italian culture and language, and traveling with Jonna.

Gail Donovan (Koepf)
B.A., Physics, Mount Holyoke College, 1967; M.S., Physics, Tufts University, 1969; M.B.A., University of Southern California, 1979
Married in 1967 and moved with spouse to Southern California in 1969. Divorced in 1977, but stayed in California until 1992 when, I decided it was time for me to move on. Since the mountains were the only things that could give me the grounding and sense of tranquility that the ocean did, I found a job at Ball Aerospace and moved to Boulder in 1992 where I met Gerhard.
My 33-year career in the aerospace industry started at TRW, included work at ARGOSystems and Ultrasystems (both small systems engineering companies), and ended at Ball Aerospace. During my career, I transitioned from orbit mechanics/computer programming to data analysis and program management to proposal management/development. Mrs. Matthews would be shocked that I made my living writing and editing.
I retired from Ball and continuous proposal work (often 7 days a week, 10 to 12 hours a day for several months at a time) to be a consultant (I plan on working on no more than 2-3 proposals a year) on 29 March 2002.

Eventually, as we (Gerhard has been a consultant for more than 5 years) transition to more retirement time and less consulting, we will travel more – we want to live for several months in places we have visited (for example, Italy, New Zealand, and Spain) either by trading homes with friends or renting a house or apartment for several months.
Married Gerhard Koepf in July 1999
Two stepsons – Phil (28 and single) and Jeremy (26 and married to Jessica)
One grandson – Oskar (born 4 June 2002)
Pets – one very spoiled cat and two equally spoiled para-keets
Parents – my mother (81) lives near us in Boulder; Gerhard’s parents (91 and 86) live in Austria (we visit them at least once a year)
Activities/etc. – Skiing, hiking, and biking (have climbed Colorado’s highest mountain); trav-eling; playing the piano; gardening; cooking; and sewing, knitting and embroi-dery.

I build big buildings.
OK, here it is. Been married to the same woman (Lorraine) for 32 years and have lived in the same house for 25 years, I hunt in PA; but I harvested more deer in South Carolina (where a friend of mine lives)in one year, than I have hunting 25 years in PA. I also fish in Alaska every couple years. The kids (two boys) are gone. So we just work and take side trips to Egypt.
I am still only 18 so don't expect any changes

From 1969-1984: I lived in Ames Iowa, taught school, worked full time in Real Estate as a broker for Century 21, and had two children, Paul Kubichek, and David Kubichek. In 1984 the boys and I moved to Swarthmore where I worked with New york Life Insurance Company and the boys attended school in the Wallingford Swarthmore School District through their graduation. In 1990, both boys had graduated and New York Life asked me to become a Training Supervisor for the company and move to Pittsburgh. Since my youngest had just made a decision to attend Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia and my other son had moved back to Iowa and taken a position in Ames, I accepted. Since that time, I have trained for five years in Pittsburgh, 3 years in Allentown and 3 years in the newly designed Regional Training Center in New York City. That closed as of the end of 2001 because of the million dollar rent ticket and the typical cost-cutting measures all companies are taking. At that time
I became Training Manager in the Vanderbilt General Office which recently moved to 120 Broadway in Manhattan and became the "Manhattan General Office" of the New YOrk Life.
In 1999 I married Marvin Gelb, whom many had the opportunity to meet at the last reunion. He and I have 50+ years with New YOrk Life between us and continue to work with agents in 2 of the biggest agencies in the company, both located here in Manhattan. We continue to enjoy our work and yet have bought a home in Swarthmore for our retirement years. We are enjoying fixing it up and also are renting it to tenants for the time being. Our life is totally consumed by our jobs, visits to Swarthmore, 4 children and 6 grandchildren. Please know there is so much more to tell when time permits. Just know that life is wonderful!

Married for 34 years to Magdalene Fong Wing-han. She taught Chinese philosophy at Hong Kong University for 29 years before she retired in 1997. I am looking forward to my retirement in 3 years, when we hope to settle down in Auckland, New Zealand. We have two daughters. Akie graduated from Portsmouth University (England) and has been working in Hong Kong for some years now. Fumie finished her universities last year (Cambridge University and London School of Economics both in England) and also is now working in Hong Kong

In 1995, both my husband, Mac, and I qualified for a buy out from the US Government and headed for retirement in Brunswick, ME - a small college community, home of Bowdoin College and the Brunswick Naval Air Station.
Prior to '95, we had spent 7 years in the Navy followed by 13 years in various posts overseas with the Foreign Service. The journey began in 1975 in Moscow, USSR at the height of the cold war and from there we subsequently moved every two years: Manila, Philippines, West Berlin (before the wall came down), Bern, Switzerland, Reykjavik, Iceland, Washington, DC for four years, experienced Leningrad, USSR become St. Petersburg, Russia. Returned to Washington the summer of 1992 and headed Down East to Maine in December 1995. We have never looked back.
Mac's "second" career is as a ski pro at Sunday River, ME. I love it as he works and I ski for free! Life is good as we can ski all winter, live in the summer in Boothbay Harbor where sail the Maine coast with time out to play with kids, grandchildren, and good friends.
My mom (88) is still very active and lives in a retirement community in Annapolis, MD. My brother Jim lives nearby in Eastport, MD. Dad died in 1998 at age 90 ending a very active life.
Married: McGregor Gray, Jr. in 1967 and 35 years later we're still best friends.
Children: Two sons: Blair (34) followed in Dad's footsteps with the US Government. Currently working in DC and living in Charlottesville, VA where his wife is at UVA for her MBA at Darden. Their children, Caleb (4) and Meg (2) are our good buddies and great fun.
Colin (31) lives with Jen in Portland, OR and is with his third start-up company. Nice they are there as it's a fun place to visit.
Hobbies: Tennis - year around. Skiing, sailing on our J-37, travel world-wide, treasurer of hospital auxiliary.
Life is good. Both Mac and I wonder how we ever had time to work!

-fell in love with the San Francisco Bay Area doing my Stanford MBA many years ago and even more importantly, fell in love with Dianne (from Palo Alto) who has been my wife, best friend and companion ever since (celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary in August);
-left the SF area in 1971 for a "brief" journey to the Midwest with my first corporate business opportunity. After 28 years with five different companies in multiple industries at eight different locations in three countries (U.S., England and Brazil), we finally returned 'home' to San Francisco in 1999;
-along the way, we collected our three 'souvenir' children... Stephen (born in Indiana), Ian (born in England) and Kristina (born in Brazil). They are now 26, 23 and 20 years old respectively and the love of our lives. Stephen-a 3rd year medical student out here in SF-recently married classmate Molly so now we have four kids;
-my business career has had some solid successes, a couple of failures and an extraordinary range of experiences. I never really wanted to go into business but 'fell into it' in the late 60's (it was that or Vietnam) and have few regrets, particularly given the fun we have had experiencing various cultures and lifestyles all over the world;
-through the years, I've tried to stay active physically by walking, jogging and playing both tennis and golf. My parents-whom some of you may remember-are alive and well at 87 and live at Hershey's Mill in West Chester. My dad can still beat me in arm wrestling and will walk 18 holes of golf in 90 degree heat with the best of them;

-after years in traditional Midwestern manufacturing companies, I joined 'the internet revolution' in 1999 and have worked with several internet services companies since then. Just this year, I landed a dream job as CEO of GlobalEnglish. We are the leading worldwide provider of online English language instruction and support for children and for large, global companies. As pioneers in the 'e learning' field, we have our share of marketing challenges but our sales have grown to nearly $10M and we have a great client list that includes HP, EDS, Citibank, Deloitte, Pfizer, Wells Fargo and many, many others. As I write this email, I am on a plane to Seoul, Korea to launch our new kids program for teaching English online to Korean children ages 7-12 years. We expect this product to be a huge success all over Asia where parents spend billions of dollars in after school programs to teach their children English. Our online service should revolutionize that industry;
-Dianne and I have absolutely adored our return to the Bay Area. Her parents are also still living and out here so she has become an important part of their lives again. We have a wonderful apartment on Nob Hill in the center of SF with a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge. This city is so much fun to explore and we walk (or ride cable cars!!) everywhere. Needless to say, we are happy, healthy and really enjoying our 'empty nester' years.

BA Marietta, 1967; MBA Babson College, 1975. Three (almost) years in the Coast Guard. For the past 28 years, I have been peddling various forms of construction equipment at the wholesale level for all sorts of manufacturers, mostly in New England. I’ve held titles from western region manager on down, and in 1994 I formed my own gig as a manufacturers’ representative. The two companies I rep in eight western states have since been a great choice, and the life style is superb – its great being one’s own boss provided the economy holds. Many have commented that when they retire they want a job just like mine!
Married to Jeanne for 29 years. Jeanne is a consultant in the health care field and also travels extensively. We have one son recently graduated in computer science and searching for that perfect opportunity. We are empty nesters and are looking to sell the house and move to the maintenance free (yes!) condo.
Interests: Rowing, skiing (lots), cycling – I’ve done bike tours here and in France -- golf, and fly fishing. Jeanne and I enjoy going to jazz festivals, especially Monterey. We sailed quite a bit in New England, but here in Colorado, my sailing is limited to crewing in some pickup races and an occasional charter in the Caribbean. My parents are still alive and still live in the same house on Haverford Place. Hope to see you all in 7/03!

Bachelor of Management Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, ’67
Began working for Dupont in Philadelphia two weeks after graduation as a chemist. Transferred to Chicago in 1971 as sales rep and back to Phila area as sales manager in 1972. Since 1976 have had a variety of jobs with DuPont in and around the Wilmington area. Currently do consulting for them on major software installations, e.g. SAP, Manugistics, on a global basis. In June of this year, I completed 35 years with Dupont.

Married Sally Cohen in 1973. We had known each other since elementary school and grew up living several blocks from each other.
We have three sons, Chris (26), Russ (21) and Matt (19). Chris has moved out of the house, but a friend of our other two sons has moved in, so it feels like nothing has changed and we may never become empty nesters.
Hobbies/interests: I am very active in the local Presbyterian Church where I am a Stephen Minister. I also referee soccer matches and have recently gotten back into the home remodel/repair mode. I am about to go to a Porsche racing school to see if I like it/still have the reflexes. I acquired a Porsche 930 in 2000.

BA History , M.Ed. Education
Married Bob Jenkins (Nether Providence High School 1962) in 1971. We spent 7 years in Birmingham, Michigan, 3 years in Bath, Ohio, and the past 21 years in Pennsylvania. We have two boys, Russ and Robb, ages 26 and 28.
Bob, just completed his 36th year with DuPont, and enjoys his current job in sales (office at home) and the perks that go with. Last fall we moved from our house in Chadds Ford after 20 years to a smaller location in West Chester called The Mews at Radley Run - "carriage" houses along the north end of the golf course. We love the smaller space without all the yard work - we were hoping for more snow this past winter so we could watch them shovel our driveway.
I taught school on army bases in Germany; Livermore, California; private schools in Birmingham Michigan; and Bath, Ohio; then switched to a sales and marketing job when we moved to PA in 1981. In 1990 Bill Spencer and I started Spencer Graphics, a graphic design and printing company in Chadds Ford and we just celebrated our 12- year anniversary in business.July 1999 I had the great honor and fun to be Dorothy Gatewood's matron of honor at her wedding to Marv Gelb in Swarthmore. We had great fun together planning the event and it was truly a lovely wedding.

In October of 2000 our oldest son, Russ, got married in Sterling, Virginia to Deborah and they're great together and doing well with their dual software development careers. They currently, (and temporarily), live in our house in Rhode Island on Narragansett Bay. No grandchildren on the horizon yet. Our other son, Robb, returned from his two-year mission in Chile in April 1999, finished his last year of college and is now working for Cambridge Savings Bank in Boston.
Life is very busy and just doesn't seem to slow down. We go up to Rhode Island about once a month for 3-day weekends, ski and play a lot of tennis in the winter and golf in the summer. We travel as much as possible. In-between we spend an inordinate amount of time in Borders and Barnes & Noble, and as much time as possible with our friends.

B.A. in English, Denison 1967

Military 1967-1970; Avoided Vietnam somehow and ended up doing my entire tour of duty in Germany. I was surprised how much German I remembered from Herr Schneider's class. He had always said that I was one of the best students to come through SHS.

Back in the states I started my business career in the property/ casualty insurance field with the Safeco Corp. in northern New Jersey. They pulled out of NJ three years later and I joined the Reliance Insurance Group, a Philadelphia company that has since gone under. I ended up in Indianapolis through a job transfer in 1977 and later went to work for American States Insurance which ended up being purchased by Safeco in 1997. Life's a wheel. Safeco wanted to move me to their head office in Seattle. I declined and took retirement at 55.

We are empty nesters. Maureen is still a member of the workforce. I take care of the house and yard, play golf, and do some day trading. It's not bad. I even fix the meals; but the wife did mention the other day that she was getting tired of peanut butter and jelly. Everybody's a critic.

Married: to Maureen for 13 years.

Children: 1 daughter, Courtney (by a prior marriage) born 1974 currently attends Tulane University Law School. 1 stepson, Andrew, born 1980, currently attends Indiana University.

Grandchildren: you gotta be kidding

Hobbies and interests: Golf, hiking and euchre (euchre is very big in Indiana; almost as popular as basketball).

Dear Swarthmore Family ~ I have thought of you many times over these months as plans have been brewing to get together. I have thought of what I would write about my life and my work.

There is much I would love to share as I love my work - it is very deep and connecting and meaningful to me and to the peoples' lives I am able to be with. I am a counsellor. Process Work by the Mindell’s is the paradigm I work with, and am open to being with people in the situations that life presents.

I have the privilege of a life partner on a simliar path and whom I have known since my twenties. We also travel and teach about communicating with people in coma, brain injury, memory loss and Alzheimers that some of us may be entering. Deeply connecting with people at huge times in the physical and spiritual lives at all ages.

We are happy to share more information if you are interested.

I have something more compelling to tell you, the reason I didn’t write to you a couple of months ago. My daughter - beautiful - precious - courageous Aliya - past away. We miss her so much. She was more nature spirit than person in her love of the wildlands of life on the northern British Columbia river, the Stikine, where she was conceived and raised, and loves being. She grew with the sun and rain on her skin, space to roam, streams to drink from, mountains to run up. She lived many lifetimes in her 25 years. We miss her and I am so grateful to have her for my daughter.

Thank you for reading. I know I would find comfort in being with you at this time and will love hearing about the gathering if someone wants to write for those of us not able to attend.

Big hugs all around and lots of love.

I’ve worked as a librarian for 34 years! Four years at the Free Library of Philadelphia, and nearly 30 years at Schlow Library, the public library in State College, PA – 8 years as a children’s librarian, and 26 years as library director.
Enjoy many aspects of library work, especially computer technology. Am currently in the midst of a major capital campaign to build a new library in State College. This project is now in year 10 – 9 years of talk, 1 year of action!
State College is definitely my home – interesting people and activities, pleasant surroundings, and not too far from the big cities that I love. Have very much enjoyed meeting regularly in NYC with Bobbie Wood Borne and Louise Lichtenberg Coffin – and others as we have found them.
Married: Bob Allen since 1986. Bob retired in 1995 after 18 years as Director of Audiovisual Services at Penn State. He’s 15 years older than I, amazingly enough.
Children: Seven stepchildren, and 15 grandchildren from 2 weeks to 23 years old.
Interests: Handbells, painting on silk and other art and handcrafts, travel, wine (the last two interests are shared with Bob). We’ve gone on four Elderhostels – the best so far was Food and Wine of Provence (Rhone wines). Wonderful
!

B.A. from Amherst College in 1967
M.Phil. from Yale University in 1970

In graduate school, I became interested in population and environmental issues and founded one of the first ZPG (Zero Population Growth) chapters in the country in 1969. Through that, I ended up planning Yale’s participation in the first Earth Day in 1970. By 1971, I decided to go to work in the population field and moved to Washington, D.C., where I became director of the Youth and Student Division of The Population Institute. A year later, I met Leta Finch in Hawaii, and she moved to Washington in 1974. We married in 1975. I stayed at the Population Institute until 1979, when I became Director of Development of Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania. During two years there, we lived in Swarthmore.
In 1981, we moved to Vermont so I could accept a job as Associate Director of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England. After five years there, I got re-involved in international work as Executive Vice-President of Population Communications International.

In 1998, I founded Population Media Center, a non-profit organization carrying out comprehensive broadcast media programs in developing countries designed to encourage avoidance of HIV/AIDS, use of family planning, and elevation of women’s status. The organization uses a methodology of entertainment-education serial dramas originally developed in Mexico and adapted for use in numerous countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The web site is www.populationmedia.org

Married: since 1975 to Leta C. Finch.

Children: Daughter, Shannen Legere, is now working at CTC Communications, doing high-speed internet and long distance services.

Pets: Devron, a 7-year-old beagle

Interests: Love to hike in Vermont’s mountains, but actually spend more time watching the movies on airplanes.

Gaynor Shay (Songer)

After graduating from Beloit College in Wisconsin, I came back to Philadelphia and taught junior high school in South Philadelphia for two years. I also worked for civil rights during that era. In 1966, I moved to Cambridge, MA. First I worked as a high school teacher in the suburbs of Boston, then for the City and State government as a developer of juvenile delinquency programs.
My goal was to live in New York City and be an artist. I moved here in 1972 and found out quickly that making a living as an artist in New York City was impractical. So I worked as a secretary, first non-profit, then for New York lawyers.
In the 1980's, while I was working in mergers and acquisitions, I attended The New School and got my masters degree in general psychology. I was promoted to secretarial manager and eventually started working downtown near the World Trade Center.
I met my husband, Jim, in the late 1970's and we were married in 1983. Jim and I bought our coop in Hudson Heights in 1985, where we still live.
I left downtown in the early ‘90's. In 1996 I started working as a Secretarial Manager at Fish & Neave, a patent and trademark law firm in midtown Manhattan. Intellectual Properties law is infinitely interesting and I will probably retire from this firm. But not soon.

Jim has been an architect in New York City since 1967 and recently, thanks to the computer, practices out of our home. In that last six months he has reconnected to his childhood interest in model railroading (in N scale).
As you all know, Nancy (and husband Drew Forbes) bought the house at 504 Walnut Lane in 1973. My mother moved to Connecticut. My siblings moved to the west coast and New England. My brother Kerry lived in New York, until he died in 1985 from AIDS. My parents have also died.
I have been focusing on Tai Chi for about ten years. Jim has been getting into it too. During the last 40 years, I have continued to produce art and occasionally sell something.
When the World Trade Center was hit, I was at work and Jim was home. He went up on the roof and saw the second tower fall from 10 miles away. My office closed at 9:50 a.m. and I walked home. This was a profound experience for both of us. Now the most ordinary things in daily life are special.

Graduated Endicott Junior College as a medical secretary & lab assistant, which enabled me to work in the lab doing finger prick blood work and urinalysis.

Lived in Boston with several of my college friends and had many jobs as a medical secretary finally working for a neurosurgeon.

Moved back to PA and worked in the Mental Health Center directly across from Temple Hospital. Due to much pressure from family and fiancè I quit & worked for a urologist in Delaware County.

Married and had a son; about the time of his first birthday, my husband was diagnosed with Hodgkin's. He lived four years, and after his death I spent most of my time devoted to my son who had multiple problems.

I became very active in support groups for parents of socially and emotionally disturbed children; helped to develop services for children who had multiple learning disabilities, and for children who were emotionally disturbed without physically disabling disorders.

I remarried in 1992 to find myself involved with an abusive man. I am going through the long and tedious process of a divorce.

I worked for an international chemical manufacturing company for 22 years. Beginning as a benefits specialist, then as benefits administrator; then went into customer service.

As of the 15th of April I am officially retired.

My entire professional life revolved around computers. It started when I got a "part-time" job programming shortly after starting my studies at Swarthmore College. When I had to choose between working 80 hours a week and college, I chose work. I lived in England, just outside London for ten years from 1966 to 1976.

Back in the US, I had a couple of jobs in the publishing industry before starting my own business. Four years of trying to make PCs work in a business environment convinced my I was better off working for someone else.

13 more years in publishing gave me second thoughts and I started my present company, an Internet Service Provider, offering web hosting and design. This one is going strong after five years.

My first marriage to Dorothy produced David and Sarah. David lives nearby and I see him often. Sarah, her husband and my two year-old grandaughter live in Houston, TX.

My second wife, Sari and I live on the same property I lived on in high school. We subdivided my parents property, dug up the swimming pool and built the home we live it. Built, in this case, means with our own hands and the help of friends. For seven and a half years our weekends and evenings were spent digging, pouring concrete, laying bricks, plastering etc. I run my business from home, so I can enjoy our handiwork all day and night.

For fun Sari and I enjoy modern dance (watching it, not doing it) and our daily stroll through the Swarthmore campus.

I worked as a crisis interventionist and manned a hot (and I do mean hot) line for the Southern California Alcohol and Drug Programs based here in L.A. County, and took a few years off when I was offered a directorship of a small battered women's shelter also here in L. A. County. I returned to the alcohol/drug program after three years at the shelter, and from there retired on a disability (the eyes, of course) and have been a home body ever since.Funny I can't tell you why, but it seems that I am working harder at being retired than I did at work!!

Married: to Darrel Diset for 35 years

Children: 1 son and a wonderful grandson, whom I adore.

Pets: 1 dog

Leslie Walmsley (Markovits)
I graduated from Penn State in 1967 and went into teaching elementary – 5th grade in Neshaminy School District. Paul and I married in 1968 and moved into a carriage house on a farm in Bucks County. We continued to teach and spent evenings and summers earning Masters Degrees. In 1972, we moved to Syracuse, NY where Paul earned his PhD, I took additional classes and continued to teach. In 1976, we moved to Bozeman, Montana where Paul was teaching and researching at Montana State University. We fell in love with Montana and took advantage of its beauty and outdoor offerings at every opportunity. Bozeman is only 90 miles north of Yellowstone, so we went to the park as often as we could. We stayed in Bozeman for 10 years and by the time we left, our daughters were 9 and 11. We then moved to St. Louis where we have remained for the past 16 years.
During all of this time, I have continued to be involved in education in some form or another. While our daughters were growing, I spent many support hours in their classrooms. While at MSU, I supervised student teachers and continued with coursework. I paid my dues as a substitute teacher for two years. When we moved to St. Louis, I worked intensely with the classrooms and coached an Odyssey of the Mind team(s), introducing the program to our district for the general population of students.
Our daughters were involved with St Louis Symphony Choirs for eight years each and I worked for the choirs during that time.
I went to work for Huntington Learning Centers (similar to Sylvan – only better!) and stayed for five years.
Currently, I work and alternately volunteer, mostly at our church, Good Shepherd Lutheran. I am hoping to enroll in the Stephen Ministry Program beginning in October. Involvements have included choir, Sunday school Superintendent, Church Council, teaching Confirmation Classes, Women’s Groups and Office work.
Paul: husband – we have been married since 1968 – as my Dad always said – it’s not long, it just seems long! That’s just a long standing joke. Paul is in Science Education, taught at Neshaminy – Biology and then earned his PhD in Science Education. He taught at Montana State University for 10 years and then became Director of the Mathematics and Science Education Center in St. Louis. He did that for 13 years and in now the Science Coordinator for one of the school districts in this area. He enjoys the outdoors, building, fixing, gardening, reading and traveling.
Sarah – daughter – 27 in November, went to Lawrence University in Appleton, WI , majoring in voice performance. Her intention was to do musical theater, but Lawrence only had opera, so she fell in love with opera. She earned her Masters in voice performance at the University of Washington in Seattle. She is currently living in Seattle and still singing, but her day job is the Recipe Database Administrator for a company called Restaurants Unlimited – they own 20+ chains, mostly in the northwest. Her interests include singing (all kinds – loves Rock), reading, cooking, and women’s issues and especially women related to music.
Tamera – daughter – 25 this past July (born 7/7/77), earned her BA in Child Psychology from University of Missouri, Columbia and then decided that she wanted to teach. So, she went back “home” to Montana and enrolled in the Elementary Education program. She now holds two BA degrees and is currently teaching near Seattle, WA. Her interests include anything outdoors, especially hiking and skiing. She is in general a fitness buff.
Leslie – Interests include walking (I walk 5 miles/day), reading, crafts, anything related to education, traveling.

Earlham College 1967
Librarian: Wallingford Public Library

For 26 years I’ve lived “downtown” in Wallingford, CT (Louise Lichtenberg Coffin is my neighbor!) Though 40,000 strong, it has the feel of a smaller town, not unlike Swarthmore. Community is important to us and we’ve stayed involved. My library career puts me in constant touch with friends, neighbors, and town leaders. Jeff is chairman of the Conservation Commission and active in other local environmental groups.

In a nutshell: life is good, I’m still evolving, and most thankful for the fine values and memories instilled by my Swarthmore High School experience. I look forward to our reunion in 2003!

Married: to Jeff

Children: Ben (29) and Karl (24) both happily pursuing their careers

Interests/Activities: We enjoy camping/backpacking in the Southwest, vacations at the Jersey shore, and winter trips to Florida. We are so fortunate to have all four parents, with whom we visit in some of these spots.
